How to install DHCP on Windows Server 2012?

DHCPDynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is another important role of every network, because it automates IP assignment and reduces the work of administrators to set IP and it’s related settings on each computer.

First familiarize yourself with enhancements of DHCP in Windows Server 2012 by this Microsoft’s TechNet page, “  What’s New in DHCP “ and then follow the below procedures to install it.

GUI method :

  1. Open Server Manager, on Dashboard, click Add roles and features
  2. On Before You Begin window, click Next
  3. On Installation Type window, select Role-based or feature-based installation, then click Next
  4. On Server Selection page, choose Select a server from the server pool, select your server from the below list, and click Next
  5. On Server Roles window, select DHCP Server, confirm by Add Features, then click Next triple
  6. On Confirmation window, hit Install
  7. Wait for the installation to be finished, then on Results window, click Close
  8. Click Notifications on Server Manager window, and click on Complete DHCP configuration
  9. DHCP Post-Install configuration wizard starts, click on Next
  10. DHCP server should be authorized before it can be functional in a domain, so on Authorization window, provide credentials – that is CYRUSBESHARAT\Administrator or any other domain admin accounts, then click Commit
  11. On Summary page, make sure it is done, then hit Close button
    PowerShell method :
Open PowerShell console and execute below command :

Install-WindowsFeature DHCP –IncludeManagementTools

In next post, I’ll explain how to configure DHCP server.

How to install DNS on Windows Server 2012 ?

DNSDomain Name System (DNS) is one of the fundamentals of every network specially on the Internet. It translates computers and domain names into IP addresses and vice versa.

First of all, know the changes of DNS in Windows Server 2012 on TechNet page by the name of “What’s New in DNS”, and if you have not installed it during the Active Directory installation, follow me to install it on Windows Server 2012.

GUI method:

  1. Open Server Manager, on Dashboard, click Add roles and features
  2. On Before you begin window, click Next
  3. On Installation Type window, select Role-based or featured-based installation, and click Next
  4. On Server Selection window, check Select a server from a server pool, select the desired server and click Next
  5. On Server Roles page, select DNS Server, confirm Add Features, and click Next twice
  6. On DNS Server window, click Next
  7. On Confirmation window, click Install
  8. On Results page, ensure that DNS installed successfully without any errors, then click Close to finish the wizard

PowerShell method:

  1. Open PowerShell and run this command:

Install-WindowsFeature DNS –IncludeManagementTools

In future posts, I’ll explain how to manage DNS.

Installing Active Directory on Windows Server 2012

logo-active-directoryThe first role that a newly installed server can have, is the role of Domain Controller (DC). By installing Active Directory (AD), the server will become a DC. Active Directory provides a central location for network administration and security.

It’s better to visit “What’s New in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS)” TechNet page to be familiar with the changes of AD in Windows Server 2012.

In previous versions of Windows Server, dcpromo (DC promotion) command was used to promote a server to a DC, but in Windows Server 2012, dcpromo has been deprecated.

Therefore, follow my 2 methods:

  1. Open Server Manager, and click on Add roles and features
  2. Click on Next, and select Role-based or feature-based installation and then click Next
  3. Click Select a server from the server pool, click the name of the server, and then click Next
  4. Select Active Directory Domain Services, in the new window, click Add Features, and then click Next twice
  5. Finally click Install, when the installation is completed, click on Promote this server to a domain controller
  6. Check Add a new forest radio button ( Because this is the first DC in our environment, we should create a new forest first)
  7. In front of Root domain name, write the name of the forest (root domain), that is CyrusBesharat.local. Then click Next
  8. Here we can choose forest and domain functional level, I prefer to keep them both intact, which is Windows Server 2012. The default configuration has selected the role of Domain Name System (DNS) server to be installed which is recommended to install DNS on a DC. And because this is the first DC in our forest, Global Catalog (GC) role is selected, and Read only domain controller (RODC) is not selected, and we cannot change them either. Under Directory Services Restore Mode (DSRM), type a strong password. This password will be used in recovery. Then click Next
  9. On DNS Options page, as this is the root domain, there is no need to delegate DNS. Just click Next
  10. Review The NetBIOS domain name, which is CYRUSBESHARAT, then click Next
  11. On Paths page, I recommend to change the path of Database, Log files and SYSVOL folders, and put them on different physical hard disk with RAID technology. Click on Next
  12. Review your selections and click Next
  13. On Prerequisites Check page, click Install
  14. After some times, the server will restart automatically

Now the second method:

  1. Open PowerShell, and type the below command:

Install-WindowsFeature AD-Domain-Services –IncludeManagementTools

Install-ADDSForest -DomainName CyrusBesharat.local

You noticed that using PowerShell is much easier and faster than the GUI one.
